We all thought it was a great idea.
We just never got around to it. At least Andrew and I didn't know about or attend the "care package" meeting.
The thought never escaped me, though. I see people around town with signs saying that they're hungry or out of work. If you're like me, you feel uncomfortable giving people money because you're not sure where that money is being spent. But keeping these non-perishables in your car is the perfect idea, and I'm not sure why I've never thought of it before.
So I went to the store the other day and got mainly what I wrote above: granola bars, canned fruit, deodorant, toothpaste, and toothbrushes.
Honestly, I can't wait to find someone in need. I don't think I've ever thought or said that before. I look forward to being a blessing to someone.
You may or not be thinking what I am: what if these people are pulling one over on me? I can't get out of my head the episode of Dateline I saw once that followed these "hungry and homeless" people. They followed them all the way to their perfectly cozy homes; homes that are better looking than mine.
All I know is that we are called to help those in need. We are to be the hands and feet of Christ. If they're pretending to be in need, that's not on me; that's not my concern. And plus, I get grace and mercy when I don't deserve it; others might be getting some amenities they don't deserve.
All in all, this project is intended to truly bless someone. I hope it does just that.
"In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.' " Acts 20:35
